Making a Drive Gear for the K&T Universal Milling Head – More Machining and Solving Challenges

With the drive gear spacer machined, I need to mount it properly to the drive gear. But more importantly, I need to figure out how I am going to machine and mount the drive dogs on the back of the gear.

Machining the Drive Gear Spacer for the K&T

An important piece of the drive gear for the universal head is a spacer screwed to the front of it that ensures proper meshing with the driven gear inside the universal head.

Machining the Drive Gear Arbor for the K&T

Continuing on with this project to get the K&T universal head mounted onto the horizontal mill. I need to machine an arbor for the drive gear and it only makes sense to do this on the horizontal mill to ensure concentricity.

Converting a Horizontal Mill into a Lathe – K&T Drive Gear

The last thing I need to be able to use the universal vertical head on my K&T horizontal mill is to mount a drive gear to the spindle. I have a blank tool holder that I think will make a good arbor. Now to figure out how to machine it.

Making New Jaws for a Wilton Bullet Vise

Disassembly of the South Bend Quick Change Gearbox

The last major piece of the 1960 South Bend 13″ lathe is to disassemble the quick change gearbox. The South Bend Quick Change Gearbox is not an overly complex piece of the lathe. The QCGB on my 1942 lathe was much harder to take apart, AND put back together.
