I wanted to add some additional protection to the wiring for my 1960 South Bend lathe, but using more modern components. In this video, I show how I wired a breaker, a contactor, a phase monitor relay and a thermal overload relay to the lathe.

I try to be constantly working on learning new skills, and one that I have been wanting to learn is machine way scraping, a skill I plan to use when I rebuild my 1960 13″ South Bend Lathe. There are a bunch of new tools I will need to accomplish this, and a straight edge is one of them. I picked up this 18″ prism straight edge as a raw casting from Denis Foster. The first step in preparing this raw casting to become a useful tool is to machine all of the necessary surfaces.

The indexing keys in my dividing head and foot stock work perfectly on the Bridgeport mill, but are too narrow for the Kearney & Trecker horizontal mill. I wanted to make a set the was a very snug fit to help ensure I have proper alignment between the two pieces.

The drive shaft on the K&T Universal Milling Head is severely work. I wanted to run a test first, so I am machining it in Delrin first to make sure my math, my order of operations and my setup is correct.

This the second and last part of a series on how I made a set of machine skates. These turned out OK. The machining could have been better. The welding could have been better. I suppose I broke the cardinal rule that if it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing. But I just wanted a set of skates. They didn’t need to be perfect and they didn’t need to be pretty.

I’ve been wanting a better way to move heavy machines around in my shop. Typically, I would use 1″ black pipe as rollers, but in many case, a set of machine skates would be easier. I want to make these so they are steerable, and will handle the weight of any machines in my shop.

I found this buffer at a recent auction that looked a little worse for wear, but I took a chance, bid on it and won. I now want to take the time to clean it up and put it to use. Things did not go perfectly, but it ended up great.
