Machining a Cast Iron Straight Edge – Part 1

I try to be constantly working on learning new skills, and one that I have been wanting to learn is machine way scraping, a skill I plan to use when I rebuild my 1960 13″ South Bend Lathe. There are a bunch of new tools I will need to accomplish this, and a straight edge is one of them. I picked up this 18″ prism straight edge as a raw casting. The first step in preparing this raw casting to become a useful tool is to machine all of the necessary surfaces.

An extended length version of the 2 part series is available on my Patreon page.

Power Drawbar for the Bridgeport Mill – Making the Tool Shelf

Next part of the power drawbar is the tool shelf (my name for this part). This requires a few holes to be bored in some relatively precise locations.

K&T Universal Milling Head – Disassembly

Now that the K&T is up and running, time to move on to the universal milling head. This is not just a vertical head, but the head rotates on two axis as well. This is especially useful for milling at an angle, and with the right accessories, cutting helical gears.

BUT, this thing has problems. Not only is there some obvious signs of wear, but several special bearings will need to be replaced costing hundreds of dollars.

Power Drawbar for the Bridgeport Mill – Making the Base Plate

I am not quite vertically challenged, but it is a bit of a reach for me to tighten and loosen the drawbar on the Bridgeport mill when I need to change tools. I could have bought a premade power drawbar, but that’s not why I got into this hobby. This is the first part in a series of videos of how I made a power drawbar for my mill.
